{"id":91,"date":"2009-02-18T23:18:37","date_gmt":"2009-02-18T23:18:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/entrian.com\/blog\/?p=91"},"modified":"2009-02-18T23:18:37","modified_gmt":"2009-02-18T23:18:37","slug":"spell-checking-entriancom-with-spellrus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/entrian.com\/blog\/spell-checking-entriancom-with-spellrus\/","title":{"rendered":"Spell checking entrian.com with Spellr.us"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-92\" style=\"margin-right: 1.5em\" src=\"https:\/\/entrian.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/02\/spellheadsmall.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"260\" height=\"100\" \/>I recently noticed a <em>spelling mistake<\/em> in one of my blog postings.\u00a0 Yikes! \u00a0For a committed spelling geek like me, that&#8217;s <strong>really really bad!<\/strong> How did it happen?\u00a0 I blame GMail.\u00a0 For a time, GMail was making my Firefox crash.\u00a0 So I switched to IE for a bit, and IE&#8217;s <code>&lt;textarea&gt;<\/code> doesn&#8217;t have a built-in spell checker like Firefox does.\u00a0 Good grief &#8211; for my last few blog postings I&#8217;d been un-spell-checked without knowing it.<\/p>\n<p>So I needed an online spell checker, and quick. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/spellr.us\">Spellr.us<\/a> came to my rescue.\u00a0 It&#8217;s very easy to use, and does everything I wanted:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>One-off on-demand checks<\/li>\n<li>Regular scheduled checks<\/li>\n<li>RSS feed of new spelling errors<\/li>\n<li>Custom dictionaries, that you can populate from the list of unknown words on your site<\/li>\n<li>The ability to exclude areas from spell checking (eg.\u00a0 blog comments, though I reserve the right to correct your spelling anyway \ud83d\ude42 )<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And as an unexpected bonus, it will even show you your pages with the spelling errors highlighted &#8211; very nice indeed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Update:<\/strong> At the time of writing, Spellr hadn&#8217;t announced their pricing.\u00a0 They now have.\u00a0 Their free plan scans 20 pages 5 times a month with no scheduling and no RSS.\u00a0 Their cheapest monthly plan is $24 and scans 1,000 pages 10 times a month with no RSS.\u00a0 To get what I&#8217;d consider a sensible minimal service, daily scans with RSS, you need to spend $47 a month.<\/p>\n<p>Too rich for my blood.\u00a0 This might be one of those vanishingly rare cases where a software developer looks at the price of something, says &#8220;I could do it cheaper myself&#8221;, and is actually right.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I recently noticed a spelling mistake in one of my blog postings.\u00a0 Yikes! \u00a0For a committed spelling geek like me, that&#8217;s really really bad!
